Are you or someone you love suffering from insomnia or suffering from other sleep related problems? Perhaps they need reishi before bed.
Reishi mushrooms have been traditionally used in Asian medicine for their various health benefits, including promoting relaxation and sleep.
Reishi does support improved sleep. With regular use, consumption of reishi mushrooms help support quality sleep. Unlike sedatives or sleep supplements, reishi doesn’t make you drowsy. Some studies have suggested that reishi mushrooms may have sedative effects, but the results are inconclusive and further research is needed to determine the exact mechanisms and effectiveness of reishi before bed for promoting sleep. Instead, the naturally occurring compounds within reishi mushrooms support stress management and calmness, which is turn supports sleep
A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that three days of reishi mushroom use “significantly increased total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement sleep” at a dose of 80 mg/kg in test subjects. Researchers observed an increase in levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a), a key substance in sleep regulation; the hypothalamus region of the brain that regulates sleep/wake cycles; and the dorsal raphe nucleus associated with learning and memory.
It is important to keep in mind that sleep disturbances can have various causes, and it is always recommended to speak with your healthcare provider before trying any natural remedies or supplements for sleep issues. They can help assess whether reishi mushrooms or any other natural remedy is safe and appropriate for an individual’s specific medical situation.
